What About New Light Viscosity Oils?
Can New, Lighter Viscosity Oils Hold Up Over The Long Haul?
Until recently, the accepted belief was always that lighter viscosity (thinner) oils do not provide the same level of engine wear protection (film coating) that thicker viscosity oils do. It was also understood that thicker viscosity oils typically do not provide the same fuel economy advantages as lighter oils, because they require more horsepower to circulate (pump) the oil through the powertrain.
Today, most preconceived notions and accepted beliefs can be thrown out the window. Previous oil performance characteristics have been shattered by the remarkable achievements of new, lighter viscosity oil formulations and additives that can, at the same time, protect engines better and demonstrate better fuel economy results. How can this be?
The advantages of advanced additives
Oil and lubricant engineers and scientists have been forced to up the ante by innovating oil formulation with additives that improve fuel efficiency and lower harmful emissions without compromising on engine protection. They really had no choice – either comply with tighter government-mandated regulations or be left behind.
So manufacturers, again, have invested heavily in the chemistry of oil composition. The result is that most major, premium brands of heavy duty diesel engine oil are re-formulated to meet (or even exceed) the new standards.
FMX® Technology = Friction Management for Xtreme Protection™
In the case of MAG 1® Heavy Duty Engine Oils, the advantage is performance-boosting FMX Technology, which delivers extraordinary performance, strength and durability under the most severe operating conditions.
The exclusive FMX Technology system works on multiple levels under the most severe operating conditions. Heat from extreme engine or equipment loads trigger a chemical reaction that transforms oil molecules, causing them to bond tightly into a multi-point, friction-fighting mesh while creating a powerful shield that’s designed to protect against metal-to-metal contact of rotating parts.
The result is unsurpassed protection.
